This is a great training ride up the south side of Mt. Magazine.  You can park at either the city hall, school, or other suitable spot in Havana.   You can also drive out to the bottom of the mountain and park at a pulloff near a Forest Service gate on the right.   The trip up and down is scenic with vistas at various locations.   The route includes a loop around by the state park lodge and scenic drive.  This route does not have a lot of traffic early in the morning, especially during the week.

Climbing:  2790 Feet

Surface:  Rural pavement, highways, and city roads

Safety:  The highways have low traffic at most times.  Use caution on the downhill until you get a feel for the road and the corners.
